If you have an e liquid vaporizer or an e-cig, you may be wondering how you can enjoy THC-based products in your device. With the legality of THC-based e liquids still not approved across the whole of the United States, there are many users in states where THC cannabis products are legalized, that are creating their own THC oil.
Cannabis-based products are continuing to rise in their legality and the process of making your own THC vape oil for vaporizers or E cigs is actually quite a simple process when you do it under safe conditions. With the popularity of portable vaporizers continuing to rise, we are going to go over the simple steps involved with changing prefilled cartridges and e juice so that it can contain THC.
It is possible that THC oil for your portable vaporizer so that you can enjoy the advantages of vaping while still experiencing the psychoactive effects the THC and cannabis-based products can produce. Keep in mind that this is a process that does require chemicals and solvents but it doesn't have to be an intimidating process either. By gathering some of this equipment and following the directions you can work at making THC vape oil that is enjoyable for use.
Keep in mind that this is a safe process but it would be wiser to pick up prefilled THC e-juice as soon as it becomes available in your area. Products produced in lab-based or manufacturer based conditions are often going to have a much better level of consistency.
What you Need to Get Started?
To start producing THC Juice you're going to need access to a few very simple materials as well as some previous knowledge on producing the main ingredients in e juice. If you're going to be producing vegetable glycerin over the short-term you need at least 3 to 4 hours for the process or 2 to 3 months for the longer and more distilled process. Rosin extraction also takes around two hours. Rosin extraction is one of the best ways to get started as it's the least complicated of all of the methods.
You can find a variety of tutorial videos available online on using the Rosin method with a hair straighter for ideal results.
The Rosin Method
This is one of the quickest ways that you can make THC vape oil at home for your vaporizer or vape pen. One of the greatest strengths of using this method is that it also produces some of the most potent THC oil that you can get it home. The reason of the THC oil using this method is so potent that it doesn't come with the same thinning agents that you would get from a VG blend.
Start first with some of the dry herb that you have on hand. You'll need to have the full sized herb nugs and they'll need to be quite dense. Ground up material will not work for this method.
Other materials that you will need include the hair strainer, parchment paper, small glass vials, natural terpene solution, a mixing wand, glass dropper, vape pen cartridge and a lighter.
The basic idea of this method is to press the brought marijuana materials into a rosin extract by using the parchment paper. From a large condensed nugget of dry herbs you likely get a few drops of material to work with an add into a vape cartridge.
The Steps in the Rosin Method
- Start by selecting a dance nugget of dry material. It's ideal if you choose one it has no stands or seeds. You'll need roughly 3g of fresh material to produce around 0.4g of rosin. It can often take several buds to produce enough for your vaporizer.
- Select and prepare the buds you would like to use and then grab your hair straighter. It's ideal to press these items around 250°F up to 280°F. Set your hair straighter accordingly and wait for it to heat up to temperature.
- Place the dry material onto a fair size piece of the parchment paper and fold the paper over top of the entire piece of dry material so that it is appropriately sandwiched and secured between the parchment paper. Place the paper in the straightener and press the paper down with as much force as you are able to for a few seconds. Try not to burn the paper or the dry material as this can compromise the results.
- After a few seconds remove the parchment paper and dry material. Take the dry material out and you should have a small amount of resin on the parchment paper that can be peeled off after it dries a bit.
- Complete these steps a few times using fresh parchment paper until you have heated up around 3g of the dry herbs. You will need a minimum of 0.4 g of the rosin in order to get enough of the EU liquid that you'll need to activate your vaporizer.
- Collect the resin that you produced off of the parchment paper using a metal dab tool. The easiest way to dry out the resin if you are pressed for time is by placing it in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 min. With the dab tool it helps if you are able to roll the material off the parchment paper and form it into a large ball.
- Place all of the rosin that you have created into the glass vial and add 8 drops of the terepene solution.
- When the rosin and terepene combine in the vial you can work at seeing up the glass until it starts to bubble. This usually takes just three or 4 seconds after the glass has been heated. Make sure that the solution is only able to boil for a few seconds. If you get everything too hot this can take away the flavor and burn off extra THC in the rosin.
- When the bubbling occurs use the dab tool to start quickly mixing the solution inside the vial. Once it is blended well together you can use the eyedropper to suck it out and add it into your e cig tank or chamber. The small amount of material may not seem like much but it will be enough to activate your vaporizer and produce a great quality the liquid.
- The rosin method produces a fairly small amount of very high potency THC vape liquid that will be super smooth that the taste and very safe for consumption. This method uses only natural materials and although it takes a bit of practice, it can help you enjoy THC vaping even when your device is incompatible with dry herb.
Troubleshooting the Rosin Method
One thing you may notice with trial and error using this method is that it can often produce an EU liquid that is a little bit more cloudy than the e juice you may be used to seeing. If you have a fairly expensive vaporizer that is designed for concentrates, you may want to consider picking up a smaller and cheaper vape pen for use with this method.
A disposable atomizer is often one of the easiest ways that you can enjoy this mixture without the chance that it might gunk up the device. It may take you a few experiences before you are able to consistently produce this type of THC e juice but it can be a worthwhile experience the first time that you produce a great quality vape juice.
The Decarboxylate Method
This is another fairly simple method that you can use for producing THC oil for your vaporizer. This method is a little bit more time-consuming but it will help you yield a little bit more vape juice if you need a fairly consistent supply.
To start with this method you will need:
- A large pot
- Finely chopped cannabis material
- Propylene glycol
- High proof alcohol like 190+ grain alcohol
- Pyrex bowl
- Dropper bottle
- Small measuring syringe.
- Two mason jars
- Cheese cloth
Do not use rubbing alcohol for this, use everclear or high proof alcohol instead.
-
Decarboxylate process
Start by placing 5 to 6g of finely chopped cannabis into a Pyrex bowl and then baking in the oven between 225 and 250°F for at least 15 min. The material should be dry and brown in color when it comes out.
At this dry material into a mason jar and pour in the alcohol to completely submerge the material. It's likely that you will need around 24 mL of alcohol to completely cover the material. The vapors here can be strong so it's important to do this in a well ventilated area.
At around 4 inches of water into your pot and place the mason jar inside the pot waiting for the water to reach a low boil. Stir the cannabis in the jar consistently so that you can evaporate the excess alcohol. The material will continue to darken and once some of the alcohol has evaporated you can remove the pot from the stove and let the material cool down.
-
The straining process
Cover the top of the empty mason jar with a cheesecloth and slowly pour the mixture from the first mason jar into the second mason jar with the cheesecloth collecting all of the dry material. You might want to consider using a knife to scrape out the bottom of the jar to make sure that you get all of the material. Squeeze the cheesecloth out with the dry and slightly wet material to strain everything into the second mason jar. You might even want to let the cheesecloth drip out for about an hour on top of the second mason jar ensuring that everything is completely drained.
-
Processing
The second mason jar will now contain liquid and alcohol but you'll need to add a few teaspoons of water into the mixture and put the jar back inside the pot. The goal here will be to boil down the rest of the liquid in the jar until you're left with around 5 mL of liquid. When you're left with 5 mL of liquid you can add 20 mg of propylene glycol to the mason jar.
After the PG has been added to the mason jar you can use this syringe to extract the liquid from the jar and store it in a dropper bottle. Once all of the liquid is extracted from the mason jar it's likely that you'll have around 25 mL of THC oil that's ready for use. As many vaporizers have a 2 to 3 mL capacity this can provide you with a large amount of THC oil for a reasonable amount of cannabis that you are using.
Conclusion
It is still highly recommended that if you're going to vape using THC vape oil, that you find a way to purchase the completed oil. A reliable dispensary will have worked with a manufacturer that's identified for producing a consistent and high-quality product. These methods can sometimes take trial and error and rather than wasting some excellent quality weed, it can sometimes be worth it to just get something that is completed and consistent.
Cannabis oil isn't too bad to produce using these two methods but some of the smells that you can invite into your kitchen may be difficult to remove for a few days once you get started. These methods are currently only legal in around 10 states were THC vape juice is legal to buy recreationally so we would suggest that these methods are taken with the disclaimer of checking out your local laws before proceeding.
If you're going to be using any type of homemade e juice it's also important that you check with the manufacturer standards for your vaporizer. Certain types of atomizers may not do well if the oil you produce is heavily unprocessed or not strained correctly. Make sure that you take real care and attention and if you don't want to risk your device, consider picking up a more inexpensive vaporizer that you use for homemade THC oil blends.
If you have a vape pen that uses e liquid concentrates only and you do want to try a THC vape oil, this is the perfect way that you can get started. Be sure to try these two easy methods for producing THC oil at home!
